Loughborough Grammar School host Year 5 children three times during the academic year, and the children get to 'taste' six different languages - French, German, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Urdu. About 20 primary schools from around the local area are involved and the primary schools nomninate up to 5 children from their school, meaning that about 100 children are in attendance.
The aim is to inspire young children to learn new languages and to generate an interest in this part of the curriculum.
The Languages Masterclass has been running for about 10 years and was introduced in addition to the successful and popular Masterclasses in Maths and Science which were already established at the Grammar School.
The Masterclasses are hosted at Loughborough Grammar School and take place on Saturday morning running from 10am-midday. The teaching staff deliver the lessons from Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School and the Convent. The Grammar School fund the project.
The Masterclass inspires a new generation of young learners to be interested in and keen to learn new languages.
The children who attend are from local primary schools and are Year 5 pupils and both boys and girls attend.
The Masterclasses will continue to run for the forseeable future and take place three times a year.
