DJing project
The aim of this partnership is to provide high-quality, structured musical opportunities to pupils in local primary schools who may otherwise have limited access to creative enrichment. Pupils have worked towards their ABRSM grade 1 in DJing, a brand new award.
Aims
The identified need was to expand access to music education - particularly in DJing and digital music skills - in communities facing high levels of deprivation and educational disadvantage. Critical factors for success include sustained weekly engagement, access to professional-standard equipment, industry partnerships, and a final public performance opportunity. The primary beneficiaries are pupils at Westbridge, Falconbrook and Griffin primary schools in Wandsworth.
Background
This partnership began in September 2024 following initial meetings with Headteachers and music leads at three local primary schools. The opportunity was identified through a shared recognition of the transformative impact of creative experiences on pupil engagement, confidence, and aspiration - particularly in schools where access to co-curricular activities is limited. The project was designed in direct response to feedback from schools such as Falconbrook, where pupils face significant socio-economic and language barriers. The partnership has been in development since September and delivery begins formally in January 2026.
Resources
The DJ course runs weekly across a 10-week programme, using school facilities for delivery. It is led by Emanuel's director of music, Charles Janz, alongside industry connections and involves around 8-10 pupils per school. The project includes a live showcase at XOYO nightclub, Shoreditch. ABRSM has introduced a new DJ grading award and these pupils are among the first in the country to take their grad 1. Pioneer DJ have committed to providing funding support to ensure the longevity of the project by supplying equipment and expertise.
Impact
Assessment has been ongoing throughout the programme by gaining feedback from pupils and staff, and through formal submission of pupils’ recorded mixes for the ABRSM Grade 1 DJ exam. Pupils will gain technical DJ skills, confidence in performance, and a deeper understanding of music structure and genres. As some of the first globally to take this new qualification, they will also gain a recognised achievement in music. The programme will be professionally documented on video, with planned interviews and footage from both school sessions and the final performance.
