The Hive

The Hive was an eight week 'virtual' programme for Year 6 girls. It took place at Farnborough Hill, led by various subject teachers. Over the course of 8 weeks, Year 6 pupils were taught Maths, English, Science, Geography, Languages, Classics, Graphics, Design and Technology and Computing.

Aims

The break-out groups gave the Year 6 a chance to make some new friends but also to hopefully feel inspired by the sixth formers who showed them how learning can be fun. The aim was for the programme provided some much needed enrichment to their learning at a time when their education had been disrupted due to the lockdown.

Background

The Sixth Form also acted as positive role models at a time when some of the Year 6 had been stuck at home for an extended period due to Covid-19 and very much enjoyed the chance to get to know some of our older girls.

Impact

The sessions began with an introduction by the relevant subject teacher and then a task was set. The girls were then put into small break out rooms with two Sixth Form mentors and via discussion and question and answer style sessions, the girls worked out their solutions and then fed back to the whole group at the end of the session.

Pupil Involvement

The Hive involved over 100 Year 6 girls and the aim of the programme was that they might feel more confident when transitioning to Secondary school having been through the Hive.

The Year 6 girls came from 50 different primary schools.

Sixth Form girls were involved as mentors and took part in leadership skills training prior to the launch of the programme.
