The Dixie Diggers

Bosworth in Bloom come in to school and run our Dixie Diggers club. This started as a planting club and is now extending to a project that will see the development of a Dixie orchard, using heritage trees created by the group. We also hope that regeneration of a field owned by the school will follow from the planting of the trees, to create community allotments, a community pond and widlife centre.

Aims

Need for a gardening club was identified by students.

Background

Local people volunteered their time to get the club going. It has been running since January 2016.

Resources

Uses school grounds, and the group meets weekly at present.

Impact

Integration of local experts into the school community. It will help children in the school value the contribution of relatively older adults. The Dixie orchard and community field projects are longer term and will grow from this group.

Pupil Involvement

25 students in the senior school are involved and approximately 10 adults/experts from the community.

Frequency

Ongoing and weekly. It will continue and develop indefinitely.
