Science Partnership with Local Schools
During the academic year Sixth Form students and staff from BMS visit some local schools to deliver a carousel of experiments to students in Years 3-5.
Following this teachers at the schools select some of their top scientists and low income/EAL/SEND students to visit the new Science Centre at BMS and take part in more technical demonstrations and experiments. Teachers also attend to gain confidence in the delivery of practical science.
In addition, other students visit the Science Centre on two respective afternoons in which Sixth Form students introduce some practical activities and assist with carrying out the experiments. Some students, for example, have never seen a Van de Graff generator, Rubens’ tube, Foucault pendulum, interactive periodic table and kinetic floor before. Science technicians also have a guided tour of the prep rooms and a discussion on health and safety.
Aims
The project aims to broaden the experience and knowledge of science in local schools and in addition provide an opportunity for some of the students, who have taken part in the initial phases, to attend our Science Academy on Saturday mornings. Taking place in our purpose-built, state-of-the-art Science Centre, the programme is designed to challenge and stretch.
Resources
Staff and student time, resources and equipment for the experiments and use of our Science Centre.
Pupil Involvement
300 students aged 7-10 (Years 3-5).
Frequency
Annual and ongoing.
