Primary Schools' Quiz
A quiz hosted by The King's School, Worcester, involving local, maintained primary schools.
Aims
Each year, King's Worcester hosts a primary schools' quiz for local, maintained primary schools. Featuring 16 teams, the event consists of four heats over the first few weeks of the autumn term, with the winner of each progressing through to the Grand Final in the week before half-term.
The aim of this partnership is to encourage local, maintained primary schools to experience the thrill of competition in a bespoke, fully funded and organised quiz held in the King's School's own, 300 seat theatre.
There have been no fewer than 8 different winning schools over the fourteen years and local schools diarise the annual event early in their school calendars.
The immediate beneficiaries are the local, maintained primary schools.
Background
The quiz has been running successfully for 14 years having been established by the then Headmaster and Director of Marketing. They identified a need to provide a medium though which some of the brightest local youngsters might be given the chance to shine in a competitive environment.
Resources
The quiz is held in the King's School's own, 300 seat theatre. It is staffed entirely by King's staff (both teaching and non-teaching) with the administration of the event being handled by Primary Schools' Liaison. The event is currently sponsored to the tune of £500 by local clothing supplier, Schooltogs.
As well as the theatre, the school dining room is used to provide refreshments for visiting teams, supporters and their parents.
There is no cost to the participant schools, save travel costs to reach The King's School. Many schools are local enought to walk!
Impact
Quantitively, over 900 pupils have been involved in the quiz over the 14 years, with over £6000 being distributed to various winners, runners-up and finalists.
Qualitatively, pupils, parents and teachers all report positively on the activity and repeatedly write to say how much they have enjoyed the event.
Frequency
This is an annual event, running since 2005. It is intended that the event continues for at least the foreseeable future.
