Primary School Sports Festival

The annual Sports Festival at King’s Worcester brought together pupils from local primary schools for a day of sport, teamwork, and community partnership. Supported by King’s Worcester's sixth form sports leadership awards students, the event offered younger pupils the chance to take part in inclusive activities, while providing older pupils with valuable leadership and organisational experience.

Aims

The Sports Festival aimed to encourage participation in a wide range of physical activities, building confidence, resilience, and teamwork among local primary pupils. It also gave King’s Worcester students the opportunity to strengthen their leadership, coaching, and event management skills as part of the school’s sports leadership programme. Success was evident in the enthusiasm of participants, the collaborative atmosphere, and the development of new skills and friendships throughout the day.

Background

As part of King’s Worcester’s thriving Partnerships Programme, the sports festival is a key annual event that celebrates collaboration between the school and the wider community. The programme enables King’s to share expertise, facilities, and time with local schools, making a positive and meaningful impact. This year’s festival welcomed over 150 Year 4 and 5 pupils from three Worcestershire primary schools, and continues to grow in popularity year after year.

Resources

The festival took place across King’s Worcester’s extensive sports facilities, beginning at Slingpool Walk playing fields in the morning before moving to the athletics fields at King’s Hawford in the afternoon. Sixth Form and Year 10 Sports Leaders designed and delivered the workshops, supported by King’s staff. Transport and lunch were also provided, helping to remove barriers to attendance for local schools.

The morning featured a lively cricket workshop, focusing on throwing, batting, and bowling, while the afternoon offered athletics activities including long jump, foam javelin, and hurdles. The day concluded with a thrilling mixed-school relay race, cheered on by staff, families, and pupils alike.

Impact

The Sports Festival was a resounding success, with feedback from schools overwhelmingly positive. Visiting teachers praised the inclusivity of the activities, noting how even less confident pupils flourished in the supportive environment.

One teacher reflected: “Our Year Five children thoroughly enjoyed themselves… It was particularly lovely to see some of our less sporty children shine at an event that was inclusive for everyone.”

Pupils themselves echoed this enthusiasm, with comments such as “the best day ever!” and “I’ve had a cracking day!” Many spoke excitedly about the skills they had learned, while teachers reported that their pupils returned to school buzzing with energy and pride.

For King’s Worcester pupils, the event offered a unique opportunity to lead, coach, and inspire younger children. Sports Leaders developed their confidence and communication skills, and one attending teacher summed up the impact: “Our staff who attended reported back positively, saying that both the King’s staff and the pupils who delivered the session were superb."

Pupil Involvement

Over 150 Year Five pupils attended the cricket session in the morning, representing 3 primary schools: Cherry Orchard, Nunnery Wood and Suckley.

Mixed-school groups ensured inclusivity and cooperation, while King’s Worcester Sports Leaders played a central role in running the day. Their commitment, energy, and encouragement created a supportive environment where every child felt valued and celebrated.

Frequency

The Sports Festival is an annual event and an important part of King’s Worcester’s Partnerships Programme. This year’s festival took place across a full day, allowing primary pupils to experience different sports in a fun, structured, and inclusive environment. With its success and strong positive feedback, the school looks forward to welcoming even more local schools in future years.
