Primary Schools' Outreach and Challenge Days

During the course of the school year, Pangbourne runs a number of outreach and challenge days for students from local primary schools. These days benefit pupils by providing access to resources and facilities which are unavailable in their school.

Current Primary Schools’ Outreach and Challenge Days include:

- Teamwork Challenge Days, including outdoor activities and high ropes course
- DT Challenge Days
- Choral Outreach Day
- Science Outreach Day
- Maths Challenge Day
- Brass Outreach Day

Aims

To support local primary schools through the provision of curricular and extra-curricular activity days which will enrich the experiences of their children and provide access to opportunities unavailable in their schools.

Background

The Primary Schools’ Outreach and Challenge programme has been running since 2014. Approximately three to four events are offered to schools in the area each term throughout the year. Most events are open to multiple schools each time.

Resources

For each day, different facilities and staff are involved.

For example, the DT Challenge Day involves three members of Pangbourne’s DT department plus up to ten Sixth Form pupils to assist on the day. Children spend the day learning techniques, and leave with a project they have made to take home. All the facilities, equipment, and materials are provided by Pangbourne, as well as lunch and refreshments.

The Choral Day involves 8-10 members of staff, pupil musicians and all Pangbourne’s music facilities. Children spend the day learning singing techniques and different genres of singing music, so they can perform a concert at the end of the day.

The Science Day will involve learning based around the primary school curriculum using our classroom and laboratory facilities. Children are taught proper lab safety techniques and learn through experiments, many of which involve something fun to take away with them.

Pupil Involvement

The primary school children are generally in years 4-6 (ages 8-11). Over 500 children per year participate in at least one Outreach or Challenge event.

Frequency

Each event named above is run annually on an ongoing basis.
