Making Music with Exeter House Special School

Salisbury Cathedral School pupils from year 1 have been working in partnership with students from the Exeter House Special School, a school which educates children with severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

On Friday mornings, our year 1 children have visited Exeter House Special School to partner with their students to explore sounds, dance and play together.

The end of term is celebrated with a party and delicious cake. We plan to create more opportunities for future visits and music-making fun as the children grow and progress through their respective schools.

Aims

The project aims to bring children together via music. Music is a great tool to enable to participation because everyone can contribute on some level.

The project is also about making friends. The children participating make new friends who communicate in different ways.

Background

Salisbury Cathedral School has established links with Exeter House Special School. The Salisbury Cathedral School choristers have collaborated with Exeter House Students many times in the past.

Resources

Impact

Children from both schools looked forward to the weekly visits so much. The Salisbury Cathedral School children quickly began to share toys with the children who were unable to move themselves and all participants contributed to the music.

Pupil Involvement

The activity joined year 1 pupils from both schools.

Frequency

Weekly during one term per year.
