Go Cook!
A new cookery programme aimed at local primary schools to introduce young people to the world of the kitchen and to teach them the basic skills they need to start cooking.
Led by one of our Food teachers, each group spends a full day learning how to peel ginger, grate carrots, chop spring onions and dice chicken to make delicious spring rolls and a chow mein stir fry. They learn about the basics of kitchen safety too, practicing the safest way to use a kitchen knife, turn on the gas hobs and how to work around hot ovens and deep fryers.
Aims
Many children at primary schools do not have access to food technology rooms and are unable to gain practical experience of food science until Senior School.
The Go Cook! programme aims to provide an introduction to food science. It has been offered to a number of primary schools in the local area with each group of children taking part in a full day's workshop. The programme will run twice a month for the whole of the academic year to enable as many schools as possible to benefit.
Background
The partnership was founded in September 2022 and will continue to be extended to include a host of other primary schools over the course of the coming months.
Resources
Visiting students use school facilities and all resources are provided. Students also receive goodie bags containing the foods they have cooked as well as recipe cards, a certificate and an inscribed wooden spoon.
All costs of transporting the students to and from school, all materials and all ingredients are borne by Truro High.
Impact
There is no testing involved but visiting teachers say the results speak for themselves with happy, engaged students returning home proud to show off what they have achieved.
Pupil Involvement
The programme is offered to students in Year 5 and Year 6. All those taking part are from local primary schools and the course is open to boys and girls.
Frequency
It will take place every two weeks for at least a year.
