Impact Statement

The School takes part in the Truro Combined Arts project each year and hosts dance and arts workshops on site for students from 10 local secondary schools. Pupils from other schools were invited to audition for our school production of Beauty and the Beast with two boys cast in leading roles. The School regularly invites primary and secondary school pupils to participate in specialist days ranging from a STEM-based Space Day hosted by the budding astronaut Suzie Imber to Women in Engineering Day and Operating Theatre Live.

The School also offers workshops to primary schools which can take place on our site or at the relevant school. These workshops cover textiles, mathematical origami, drawing, photography, music and drama.

Each year the school runs a Bake-Off competition for Year 6 pupils from local primary schools. In 2018 more than 300 pupils from 12 schools took part. The winners from each school visited Truro High School for the semi-finals and finals which were held in the school's cookery classroom. The overall winner won a cookery session for her and her whole class at the School.

The School hosts an annual netball tournament and two local primary schools regularly use our swimming pool, as do children from two local nurseries who also make weekly use of our dance studio.

The school has run a successful art competition for pupils from 30 local primary schools in which they were encouraged to design their best invention for the year 2050.

The school celebrates International Women in Engineering Day each June. In 2018 around 200 Year 8 girls from 18 local schools visited Truro High School for the day. They attended a range of laboratory sessions and interactive demonstrations delivered by engineers from across many sectors in Cornwall. They also worked in teams on projects, such as building a spectrometer, bridges and boats as well as a virtual reality experience working with subsea remote-operated vehicles. The day was supported by a range of engineering firms. This will be running again in 2019 and is supported by local state schools who are an integral part of the planning process. The Ogden trust support the event every year and provide financial support to schools for their transport costs.

For the last two years the School has offered an event for aspiring medical students run by Operating Theatre Live. This event is open to Years 10-13 pupils from Cornwall and gives them the opportunity to experience what real surgery is like. The team transform the School's hall into a portable operating theatre allowing students to get hands on with real anatomy in a clinical setting. 120 pupils from across a range of Cornish schools took part.

From this year we have offered both interactive workshops and lecturers as part of our Aspiring Medics and Engineer programmes. Students from across the county have attended some or all of the opportunities we have offered. These invaluable experiences help inspire the next generation and help give them the experiences for them to prepare for our future world.

Scholarships

Scholars are expected to show an engagement with their studies or talent over and above that of their peers and show considerable commitment to their relevant area of school life – whether academic, music, sport, art or drama. They will act as ambassadors for the School.

Scholarships are not tenable against boarding fees and are not available to girls entering the Prep School but are available to those girls going into the Senior School from our own Prep 6.

Scholarships can be supplemented by a means-tested Bursary up to (ordinarily) a maximum of 50% tuition fee remission. Joint scholarships/bursaries are reviewed annually.

Isles of Scilly Award

Truro High School has a strong tradition of welcoming Isles of Scilly girls into the Sixth Form as boarders for A level study. In recognition of the fact that no post-16 education is available to these students on the islands, we offer an Isles of Scilly Award which can go up to a maximum of 50% fee remission against BOTH tuition AND boarding fees.

Candidates are required to sit the Sixth Form Numeracy and Literacy examination papers and parents are required to complete a means-tested Bursary form.

Bursaries

Bursaries are available for those from Prep 3 – Year 12. They are means-tested and available to girls who have been offered a place but whose families cannot afford full fees. The Bursary Application Form is assessed very carefully and the Bursar adheres strictly to the guidelines laid down by the Independent Schools’ Bursars’ Association. A recommendation is then made to the Headmaster on the amount of financial help the school can offer based on parental need and the level of funds available. A Bursary award would not normally exceed 50% of standard tuition fees but can, on occasion, cover 100% of fees.

Bursaries are tenable against tuition fees but not boarding fees. They are reviewed annually.

Bursary recipients are expected to make a full contribution to school life and show considerable commitment to our community. They act as ambassadors for the School.

Bursaries are also available to current pupils whose family circumstances have drastically changed and the payment of fees has become extraordinarily difficult.
