Florence Nightingale Lamps
Year 10 GCSE Art pupils from Palmers Green High School visited St Monica's School to take the lead during an Art afternoon. The project chosen linked directly to St Monica's School's History project on Florence Nightingale. Together they constructed a 3D decorative lantern using paper and mixed media. This created a good cross-curricular link between Art and History for the Year 2 pupils.
Aims
• To enhance the Year 2 History project by introducing a creative arts element.
• Wider aim is to develop individual arts programmes to build creative relationships between local communities and schools
• To establish groundwork with the intention of setting up an Art Award programme for pupils at PGHS
Background
• Desire to develop collaborative arts programmes in Enfield
• A link was created with St Monica’s School and the project was created to enhance what they were already doing in History. PGHS has established the link this academic year with the intention of offering a variety of opportunities to the pupils. This has also created the opportunity for local teachers to network.
Resources
• Time for the Head of Art to plan the project and instruct the PGHS pupils in what they would be doing
• Partnership school facilities were used
• PGHS Head of Art created the project and accompanied the girls to the partnership school
• This was an afternoon activity with prior planning done at PGHS
• PGHS art materials used.
Impact
The activity was a positive experience for Year 10 GCSE Art pupils who enjoyed the whole event immensely and quickly built their confidence by enabling the Year 2 pupils to create a Florence Nightingale inspired lamp. Positive letters from Year 2 pupils sent to Year 10 following event. Activity showcased in Newsletters from both schools.
