After School Clubs for local primary schools
Each year Bloxham pupils take part in an aspect of community service. All students in the Lower Sixth are expected to complete a year of community service where they take part in helping to run an activity for the benefit of those in the wider community. Activities include running after school clubs for local primary schools.
Pupils from Bloxham CoE Primary School and Great Tew Primary School visit Bloxham once a week for after school clubs. These include animals, art, cooking, design and technology, maths, modern foreign languages and the word club (reading and literacy).
Aims
The after-school clubs were initiated to help to support local primary schools pupils with core subjects (e.g. maths, reading and writing) and broaden their learning with provision of facilities not on offer at primary level (e.g. food technology, design and technology).
The clubs also help us to foster closer links with the local community.
Resources
Activities take place in Bloxham’s classrooms, with one member of teaching staff assigned to each club. The primary schools also bring members of staff to escort their pupils. There are roughly 20 to 50 children attending each week from each school for hour long sessions throughout the academic year.
Pupil Involvement
Pupils attend from Year 5, age 9 to 10.
Bloxham School pupils involved are in the Lower Sixth, age 16 and 17.
Frequency
This is an on-going arrangement with both schools, with activities running once a week. These activities have been provided to local primary schools for a number of years.
