Impact Statement

The School provides access to the Swimming Pool for two state primaries, offering just under 3 hours a week for swimming lessons. Two other state schools have stopped swimming lessons. One state school holds its nativity play and rehearsals during a week in December, making use of the Ship Theatre. The same school also holds it combined Teacher and Parents’ Summer Ball at the School, utilising the main Assembly Hall.

The School strives to provide financial support of 6% of net fee income for Bursaries and last year provided £417k support (4% NFI) to families seeking support including 10 girls who receive over 95% of fees in means tested support. Members of the Sixth Form weekly visit St John’s Primary School to assist with reading with pupils and a Walthamstow Hall Governor has recently been elected as a co-opted Governor to St John’s. At a senior level, local schools, including Grammar schools, have sent staff and pupils to attend careers events including providing support for UCAS applications to state pupils and an Oxbridge information evening hosted and arranged by Walthamstow Hall.

In addition, we have provided Lady Boswell’s Primary School with STEM support, and have agreed to a member of staff becoming a Governor there. Meetings are during the School day which impacts on cover. We are in the early stages of exploring an Engineering/Computer Science link in partnership with Townley Grammar School.

The Senior School offers means-tested bursaries to enable girls from families facing financial limitations to benefit from a Walthamstow Hall education. Bursary applications are examined on a case-by-case basis and offered on a sliding scale dependent on the value of a family’s income and assets. Founders’ bursaries, offering up to 100% of tuition fees across 11+, 13+ and 16+ school entry are available for families in the greatest need. Parents whose daughters are in receipt of a Founder’s Bursary are asked to pay a nominal fee of £50 per term. Subject to meeting the School’s basic academic admission requirements, bursaries are agreed, subject to available funding, where a pupil would not otherwise be able to take up a place at the School because of the financial situation of a parent or guardian, thus widening access to a Walthamstow Hall education. The School also provides means-tested hardship bursaries for the families of existing pupils that have fallen on hard times wherever possible. Missionary daughters are educated free of charge where their parents are working in a foreign mission field. 

The Senior School also offers financial Awards to girls who show exceptional promise academically or in sport, drama and art. There are two types of Award; ‘Exhibitions’ are Awards worth a value of up to 24% of tuition fees and ‘Scholarships’ are Awards worth between 25 and 50% of tuition fees. Students wishing to apply for Awards are assessed by examination, interview and, where appropriate, audition/practical assessment. Awards worth 5-25% of the value of annual fees is usually the norm, but combined scholarships of a value up to 50% of the fees are also offered to very exceptional students. Recipients of Awards are referred to as ‘scholars’. 

Currently 46 girls benefit from bursary support, with 19 on 90% or above support. A further 146 girls have been awarded Scholarships ranging from 5 - 50% off fees.
