We can, We do, We will
A British writer, broadcaster and former barrister, came to speak to Year 5/6 Cavendish pupils on various topics linked to diversity. Year 6 pupils from Hawley School, a neighbouring state primary, were invited to join.
The writer began with a discussion of her own experience of growing up mixed-race in London, then about her work and travels making documentaries focusing on Africa. She also spoke about her own African fashion brand @sikadesigns. The children explored the history and culture of the continent including its colonisation, considered perceptions of Africa past and present and gained an understanding of the energy and diversity of Africa today. Her talk was followed up by workshops with the pupils from both schools.
Aims
Both of the schools operate in multicultural London and have pupils from diverse cultural, including African, backgrounds. The aim was to start a conversation about Africa that did not focus on negative images and opinions.
The hope was for the pupils to have renewed interest in the history of the continent and its relevance to their lives in London today.
Impact
It is anticipated that negative perceptions of Africa will be more easily rebutted by the pupils of both schools.
