Primary Science Day

Year 4 from a local primary school attend an annual Science day that is organised and led by the teachers in the Science Department at Chandlings Prep. The primary school pupils explore our purpose built labs with some hands-on use of apparatus to solve a crime. They also have access to our grounds where the children get to use the pontoon to pond dip.

Aims

To increase primary pupils’ enthusiasm for and confidence in Science.

To introduce primary pupils to a Science laboratory and its apparatus.

To develop a partnership between primary schools with Chandlings Prep.

To give the primary pupils the chance to use facilities that they may not have access to.

Resources

Head of Science develops relationships with local primary schools and spends time organising logistics.

The school funds resources for each activity and provides minibus travel to and from Chandlings Prep.

Two members of teaching staff deliver a session in the Labs (approximately 1 hour).

One member of staff delivers a session at the pontoon (approximately 1 hour).

Teachers prepare resources ahead of the visit.

Local primary school staff to help staffing and managing their own pupils.

Provide snacks and lunches during the day. 

Impact

In the first year of this project, 24 primary pupils from a local schools attended. All primary pupils reported that they enjoyed the sessions and it made them want to learn more about Science.  

Pupil Involvement

Around 30 Year 4 pupils every year from the local primary school.

Current Chandlings Prep Year 4 pupils act as hosts at break and lunch time. 

Frequency

This is an annual ongoing partnership.
