Maths Symposium

Our Maths Department hosted an inspiring Star Wars-themed GCSE Maths Grade Booster Symposium last week (appropriately held on May the 4th!), open to Year 10 pupils from across the region. Over 100 pupils took part from RHS, King's Ely, Holbrook Academy, and St Mary’s Colchester.

Aims

The first session, titled 'Reach for the Stars: Aiming for Grades 8-9,' explored exam techniques and how to ensure a top grade. Keynote speaker Zoe Griffiths, a mathematician, former teacher, and maths communicator, then addressed the young audience, inspiring them with barcode predictions and mind-reading.

After a delicious RHS lunch, pupils then participated in an exciting 'Ultimate Galactic Maths Challenge' where they further developed their maths knowledge with some fun Star Wars-themed problems, with the help of the RHS Maths Department and pupils studying Further Maths.

Impact

Head of Maths and organiser of the event said, 'What a superb day! We were fortunate to have such excellent speakers and it was great to see the pupils so engaged in the maths challenge in the afternoon!'

A pupil quoted, 'I really liked the maths quiz in the afternoon; it was great fun, especially as all the questions had a Star Wars theme.'

One of the schools quoted, 'It was so lovely to see 110 pupils from various schools working together to solve mathematical problems.'
