Debatemate

Debatemate is an example of a partnership that benefits our students and therefore indirectly supports students from less privelidged backgrounds.

We have used Debatemate as a platform for teaching our students about the importance and value of public speaking. They have delivered training for all our students nd they run a weekly club for our top debaters at school as well as enrichment sessions.

Aims

Debatemate is used in numerous state schools for delivering debating and we have been involved with them for 3 years and are entering competitions organised by them in the London area.

Background

Debate Mate aims to tackle educational disadvantage in some of Britain’s most deprived communities.

It does this by recruiting and training university students to run extra-curricular debate workshops in schools with an above average percentage of children eligible for Free School Meals.

Our programmes increase speaking and listening attainment and improve a range of higher-order thinking skills and non-cognitive abilities such as confidence, teamwork, and leadership.

In doing so, our programmes address the widening skills gap between education and employment, whilst raising aspirations and helping students to make informed post-18 choices.

Resources

The contribution we have made to Debatemate to facilitate our training goes to provide training for students in deprived areas.

We are in negotiation to fund and host some Debatemate compettions here at Habs.
