Debatemate Day
Habs Girls hosted a day of debating with Year 6 Students from Habs Boys and Albans City School - a primary school in St. Albans.
Aims
Each year we have a debating day for the Habs students and this year we decided to invite the Y6 students from a school in St. Albans.
Background
We have been forging links with Albans City School over the past year and we are hoping that this will be the start of more collaboration between the schools.
The link was established by the Senior Deputy Head at Habs.
Resources
The event was hosted by us and we funded the Debatemate mentors and also the transport/lunch for our visitors.
Rooms in school were allocated beforehand.
Impact
This was the first time we had done this and we will be asking students from all three schools to evaluate the day. Initial feedback was very positive:
"Thank you so much for today. The children seem to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and are very enthusiastic about debating now, so hopefully we can follow this up soon. I really appreciate all the work that went into including our pupils in the day."
"Many thanks for organising a brilliant day today. The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and, as ever, I was incredibly impressed by the quality and maturity of the trainers. Debating and oracy are absolutely critical skills that we are keen to promote at every opportunity and the day served as a perfect introduction to the debating competition which we are launching towards the end of the month (the Girls' Junior School is competing).'
Pupil Involvement
Year 6 from 3 schools - mixed groups.
