Body Percussion with local schools

Body Percussion is a unique opportunity for pupils  from different schools to come together in an interactive way and create music via The Beat Goes On, culminating in a performance to parents and guests.

Aims

The Beat Goes On workshops are designed to encourage children to get active, develop musical skills and use music as a way to promote wellbeing for both the individual and the school community. Participants are encouraged to work together to develop new ideas about how music can be made.

Background

This is the second year of the Beat Goes On workshop after the success of the first event last year. It was originally designed as an outreach project for a small number of schools, but the demand has grown so much that two days were allocated this year rather than just one.

Resources

We provided two days of specialist coaching for a ‘STOMP’ style workshop held by former cast member, Ollie Tumner of the hit West End Show. In addition to the costs of the workshop, we provided refreshments for all participating pupils, refreshments for visiting parents, and overnight accommodation for the former star. We provided all the staff support, plus the whole of the Griffin Centre was made available for both days.

Impact

The following quotes were received on the day:

"The children always enjoy Ollie’s enthusiasm and it shows in their performance and the many smiles that leave us at the end of the day. Thank you to Ollie for another brilliant workshop"

“It is such a fantastic day and a wonderful event for all the children regardless of ability.”

“That was brilliant! What a fantastic theatre and performance. It’s clear the children really enjoyed the day.”

Pupil Involvement

Year 5 and 6 pupils from a total of 11 schools were involved in the performances; in all, that meant over 250 children were able to take part and enjoy the experience.

Frequency

This is the second year of the Beat Goes On workshop, and we hope that we will be able to run it again next year subject to demand.
