Impact Statement

We have continued to develop beneficial partnerships with local state primary and secondary schools even extending our provision of Friday afternoon lessons where our staff delivered over 160 hours’ worth of Maths, English, Spanish, French and Science lessons. At the very heart of our partnership programme was a focus on delivering gifted and talented lessons, which potentially has continued to have a direct impact on teaching and learning strategies.
In addition, all teachers attending our annual Autumn Challenge Workshop were provided with a copy of the book, Maths Resources for Able and Gifted Mathematicians written by a former head of Mathematics at KEHS. In short, our focus on Gifted and Talented Outreach sessions has allowed us to share teaching expertise and generate targeted, innovative resources for local state secondary schools, this has particularly been the case through our Maths Masterclass Programme. We have also continued to assist state schools with Oxbridge and university preparation.
As well as the overall academic influence of our work, another key impact for state schools has been the way in which it has raised the aspirations of pupils and their parents, encouraging some of the pupils to sit competitive entrance examinations for local state grammar schools as well as local independent schools including KEHS.
The most meaningful partnerships are those that are mutually beneficial; at KEHS 53 of our students have participated in our primary outreach programme. The majority of them were Sixth Form students, however, four Lower Fourth students participated in and helped to deliver the RE Workshop: ‘Respect for All’ in their new role as Religious Studies Ambassadors. All of this work has been beneficial in helping to nurture and develop our girls’ mentoring and coaching abilities.
In our role as a Teaching School we have helped to facilitate partnership involvement in nationally accredited leadership qualifications which has had a direct impact on leadership development and succession planning. We have also continued to act as an Appropriate Body for NQTS from the state sector.

Scholarships

KEHS offers Academic Scholarships to the most able girls at 11+ and 16+ at the discretion of the Principal. Academic Scholarships are available each year and there is no separate scholarship examination.

Scholarships are not available to girls joining the school during Thirds, Lower or Upper Fourth years (Years 7, 8 or 9).

Music Scholarships are available to girls joining the school at 11+ and 16+. At 11+, girls who achieve very highly in our entrance examinations, and who are also Grade 6 or above in their musical instrument, will be invited to audition. An application for the Music Scholarship must be submitted with the registration form. Applications for our Sixth Form Music Scholarships are available to girls who have surpassed grade 8 and who are showing a significant commitment to furthering their musical education, for example by involvement in the National Youth Orchestra or National Youth Choir. The level of playing should be that which might be considered as gaining a place at a post-18 Music Conservatoire in due course, regardless of whether or not that pathway is intended.

Sports Scholarships are available to girls joining at 16+. We recognise that any pupil who is on a national pathway to international representation is already motivated, determined and has had to face adversity. We value these character traits highly and would welcome an application for a Sixth Form Sports Scholarship from girls who fit the criteria.

Assisted Places

Our school aims to offer an exceptional education to the brightest girls in the Birmingham area, irrespective of their parents’ ability to pay fees. Funding for Assisted Places is provided thanks to a substantial grant from the Governors of the King Edward VI Foundation and generous donations from Old Edwardians.

An Assisted Place is awarded on academic merit based on the school’s own entrance examination at 11+ and academic interview at 16+. Assisted Places are means-tested, based on family income and assets.

Demand for Assisted Places far exceeds the funds currently available, so unfortunately not all girls who perform well in the examination and apply for an Assisted Place can be funded.

Parents must indicate interest in an Assisted Place on the Registration Form.

What is the difference between an Assisted Place and an Academic Scholarship?

An Assisted Place is awarded on academic merit based on the School’s own 11+ Admissions Examination in January. It is means tested and is based on family income and assets. Families with income below £20,000 will pay no fees, and there is a sliding scale which provides a fee reduction for families with income up to £72,000. The scale is available on the website.

Demand for Assisted Places far exceeds the funds currently available; we are not able to offer Assisted Places to all eligible girls. Parents should indicate on their application form, that they wish their daughter to be considered for an Assisted Place.

An Academic Scholarship is awarded for academic merit, based on the school’s own 11+ entrance examination. Scholarships are not means tested and range in size from 10% to a maximum of 50%. It is possible to receive a joint award of a scholarship and an Assisted Place.

Sibling Discount

A tuition fee sibling discount of 25% is available for the third and subsequent child(ren) currently attending either this school or King Edward’s School where parents are paying full fees for three or more siblings from the same immediate family.
