Impact Statement

Every year a group of Sixth Formers run a Minimus Latin club in one of our local primary schools during the spring term. This provides an opportunity for primary school students, who otherwise may not have had the chance to learn Latin, to experience the subject and learn the basics of the language. Pupils also learn more about mythology and Ancient Roman culture through rehearsal and performance of a play. NHEHS students develop their confidence through teaching the subject and have described it as a very challenging and rewarding experience. The project is very popular and is normally oversubscribed. This year we also worked with Classics for All to host an evening for teachers who were interested in starting/increasing their Classics provision at primary or secondary level which led to several new leads.

Support for students applying for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Sciences and related subjects.
We invite students and staff from local schools to lectures given by practising doctors, dentists and university students. In July 2018 we hosted a conference for Year 12 students. We also provide interview practice at NHEHS to both our students and those from local secondary schools. These are held in a multiple mini interview format which enables many more students to participate. About 8 interviews occur concurrently and the interviewers have included top consultants, GPs, junior doctors, dentists, medical and dental students and Year 12 drama students. Students from all participating schools benefit from attending the lectures and from the discussion with their peers. It gives them an opportunity to meet other students applying to similar courses and universities from a wide range of schools. All students benefit hugely from the interview practice prior to possible university interviews.

Every year we host a number of taster or challenge days for pupils in local junior schools run by staff and Sixth Form students from our senior school. Last academic year, these included a Forensics Day and a code breaking maths afternoon. Our PE department host a number of fixtures with local state schools and every spring run a High Five netball tournament for 6-8 local state primary schools which involves a combination of coaching and tournament for teams of 10 pupils from each school. Last year we also hosted a Day of Dance for Year 5 pupils which included coaching and a performance.

This academic year we are seconding our British Council German assistant to work on a weekly basis with a local state school. Her work has improved the level of spoken German of the classes she has worked with as well as enriching their cultural knowledge. This has also led to closer links between the two schools with more joint ventures planned for the future.
