Impact Statement
Our swimming pool is used free of charge by two local state primary schools.
The Headmaster of Great Moor School has written: “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to use Stockport Grammar School’s swimming pool on a regular basis. Not only is it a great facility that is very well maintained, it is also very close to our school which means we can walk to swimming. Sole use of the pool enables swimming teachers to really concentrate on developing children’s swimming skills. We have 324 children who all benefit from a six week block of weekly swimming lessons each school year. Some of our children are confident and competent swimmers and they love going to the pool to extend their skills. Other pupils have less experience of swimming and less opportunity to go swimming with their families and for these the experience of swimming lessons in a quality pool (with all the arm-bands and swimming aids) helps enormously with them learning to swim.”
Each year we host a Maths Competition for Year 5 children from local primary schools. The competition is oversubscribed, even though we now extend it to a full day to offer as many schools as possible the chance to participate. Local primary teachers value the opportunity to provide an academically challenging and fun experience to pupils whom they have identified as gifted in Maths. The competition is run by Stockport Grammar School’s Maths department. About 160 pupils from twenty four state schools take part each year.
Each year we host an Art Exhibition and Competition for Year 5 children from local primary schools. The competition is judged by Stockport Grammar School’s Art department who also run Art activities on the exhibition evening. In 2018, 119 children from 17 state schools took part. The 2019 competition takes place in February and we are already oversubscribed with primary schools keen to offer this opportunity to children who are enthusiastic and gifted in the subject.
This year we have run two enamelling workshops for state secondary schools using high specification kilns donated by the Goldsmiths’ Company. The Head of Design and Technology at Hazel Grove High School has written: “Myself and the year 10 students had a fantastic time with the Head of Technology and the Technology team. The students were having so much fun creating their enamelling samples, they didn’t want to leave! A truly enjoyable day learning about a range of processes. Thank you so much for the enrichment opportunity.”
In 2018 we ran our first Sustainable Science Competition for Year 10 children from local state schools. The day involved activities run by our science staff in the laboratories. Eight state schools booked to take part and we intend to run the competition again in 2019.
