Impact Statement

Mentors Scheme at the Essa Academy in Bolton. Boys from Bolton School go out and work one to one with secondary school pupils to support the delivery of Maths, English and Science lessons. This is done during the school day and has proved very successful, students being mentors have gone from being below expected progress to being on target.

SHINE programme - This is a Saturday School managed by Y12/13 students and teachers for Y5 children. This has been a great success and over 40 Year 5 children from 11 local primary schools have enjoyed the variety of sessions on offer each Saturday. The children study a mix of traditional subjects, including Physics, Music, Art, Geography, French, German and the Sciences, but are also introduced to more unusual offerings which they will not be exposed to through the normal curriculum, such as Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Food Technology, Latin and Greek and Outdoor Pursuits. Towards the end of the programme, the group undertake a day trip to Catalyst Science Discovery Museum. The 11 week programme concludes with a Celebration Evening - a graduation style event with prizes given. The children were keen to show off their work to parents and teachers. The SHINE programme has completed its 9th year. The children showed real progression over the weeks. SHINE sessions are delivered across the UK through partnerships between SHINE and independent schools, with the aim of raising educational aspirations of young children while also allowing them to develop teamwork skills, make friends and have fun. The sessions are free for participating children. Feedback from participating schools reports that the children are engaged and enthused with their school work.

Re -Sports Partnerships with State Schools section:-

Bolton Sports Alliance: Bolton School helped to form the Bolton Sports Alliance in 2015, and since then the School has played a vital role in its continuing success. In response to continuing cut-backs of sport provision from the local council, Bolton School collaborated with three long-standing partners and charitable non-profit organisations, Bolton Wanderers FC Community Trust, the Lancashire Outdoor Activities Initiative and the Bolton Lads and Girls Club to form the Bolton Sports Alliance (BSA). The Alliance aims to provide high quality sport and physical education for the primary schools of Bolton using recognised local deliverers. The University of Bolton has recently become the fifth strategic partner in the alliance.
The Alliance orchestrates a network of associate partners and the BSA has access to outstanding facilities.

Together the 'partners' have been able to reach into many more schools offering sports, resources and venues. Young people are benefiting through the provision of high quality outdoor & indoor experiences. This raises aspirations, supporting physical and personal development and creating a more active and healthy way of life.

The School hosts an annual football festival, enjoyed by 140 teams and more than 10,000 7-11-year-olds. A testimonial from a local primary school, spoke of how support from Bolton School had been “very positive” in its efforts to use sport as part of its inclusion programme for newly arrived international pupils.

Bolton School pupils also help to run an annual sports festival for local Year 5 & Year 6 children, as well as town cross-country and swimming championships.

In February, Bolton School won the ‘Whole School Community Initiative of the Year’ Award at the prestigious TES Independent School Awards 2018. The judges said: “There is an extraordinary amount of work being done for an awful lot of people, with a very wide range of opportunities being provided."

Bursaries & Scholarships

Bursaries

Financial assistance is available to those families with pupils entering Bolton School Girls’ Division or Boys’ Division from ages 11 through to 18. Currently, one in five pupils receive Bursary-assisted places.

The awards are based on the child's performance on the Entrance Testing Day and the degree of assistance required. The latter is based on an annual declaration of income and assets. The Bursary will continue for every year in which your child remains at the School. However, the amount to which you are entitled is re-assessed annually.

Parents whose income is less than circa £20,000 may be offered full remission of fees. Those parents whose income exceeds circa £80,000 will not qualify for assistance.

Bursary support is also available to students who apply to join the Boys' or Girls' Division Sixth Form. We award bursaries after consideration of family income and a student's academic merit. In order to help us ascertain the academic potential of students applying for a bursary we will require them to sit a cognitive test administered by the School.

Scholarships

A number of new Scholarships are available to pupils entering either the Girls’ or Boys’ Division in Year 7. These generous Scholarships are not means-tested and are awarded to those pupils who, we believe, will make a strong contribution to the academic and wider life of the School.  

The Scholarships are offered at the discretion of the Headmistress or Headmaster following the Bolton School Entrance Examination and Interview.

Separately, half and full organ scholarships are available in the Boys' Division only.
