Impact Statement

We have, for several years, run a fortnightly outreach programme for English, Maths and Sports to some local primary schools. The feedback from the respective Headteachers and class teachers has been very favourable, not only in terms of the pupils' experience but also the insight it has given staff in both schools to cross-phase teaching and learning. Similarly positive responses have also been received from the wider range of primary schools that bring pupils for day or half-day sessions in specialist subjects in the summer term. Their teachers comment on how this has helped in the transition to secondary school by giving pupils experience of a larger school site and specialist facilities and giving them something tangible to look forward to about the move to Year 7. Our CCF and our interview preparation for university entry with local secondary schools is also successful with those schools sending pupils each year. Our Community Service programme includes Sixth Form pupils helping with reading programmes in a range of local primary and special schools, to the benefit of both groups of pupils. Teachers in those schools value the greater exposure to reading to others that this affords and the development in reading skills that follows. We have shared transport on school trips with local secondary schools which has made the transport costs more affordable to both schools.

Financial support is provided through the School’s means-tested bursary programme which is at the heart of our ethos and charitable purpose today.

In the last academic year, King Edward’s provided over £1.1 million of means-tested bursary support, with around 20% of pupils in the Senior School in receipt of a bursary.

Bursaries
At present, means-tested bursary awards are usually restricted to pupils joining Years 7 and 12. Once awarded, unless parental financial circumstances change, bursaries will usually continue throughout the pupil’s time at the School.

All bursaries are subject to annual review and may be varied up or down if parents’ financial circumstances alter but this will always be done in discussion and consultation with parents. Whilst the School endeavours to increase the bursary award proportionately in line with year-on-year fee increases, this is dependent on the School’s financial circumstances and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

In addition to providing financial support in relation to fees, the School may also be able to provide further assistance to bursary recipients towards purchasing uniform or meeting other costs such as certain school trips.

Other scholarships and awards
In addition to our means-tested bursary programme, we also offer the following non means-tested awards

Year 7 academic scholarships
There is no separate academic scholarship examination. Academic scholarships may be awarded to those pupils who excel in the entrance examinations.

Year 7 Special Talent Awards
These awards may be made to candidates who show outstanding talent in one of the following areas: art, drama, music or sport. Applications for Special Talent Awards can be made via the online registration form.

Both scholarships and Special Talent Awards are for a fixed sum, usually payable each year up to GCSE Level, subject to continued good performance. A Scholar or Special Talent Award holder may also hold a bursary award.

Year 12 (sixth form) entrance awards
A limited number of Discretionary Headmaster’s Awards may also available for entry into the Sixth Form.

Awards made under the Special Talent, Scholarship and Discretionary Headmaster Award programmes are of a relatively small value. The school focuses its financial support on families through its means-tested bursary programme, in line with its ethos and heritage.
