Primary School's Gala Concert
Trinity School puts on a significant Gala Concert on an annual basis. The School invited seven local state maintained primary schools to attend a matinee concert. The intention was to provide state primary school's with an opportunity to go to a musical concert as well as to inspire an interest in the music for younger students.
Aims
Trinity School exists in a London Borough that has significant disparities of affluence. The cost of a trip to watch a concert would be significantly beyond the means of many primary pupils' families or indeed the schools themselves. Performances in the primary school environment are inevitably not on the same scale as Trinity's; if able to be funded at all. There was also a need to showcase what being part of a concert band/ensemble/orchestra is all about as well as exposing some primary pupils to a musical experience that they might not access from home.
Background
Trinity School's Gala Concert is an annual event. It was identified from the School's marketing/events co-ordinator that there was an opportunity to offer a matinee concert for local primary schools prior to the evening event.
Resources
Trinity School liaised with the 7 primary schools to ensure they had the required amount of tickets. In the case of some of the Schools Trinity organised and funded the transport to the school. The School provided refreshments for the visiting schools. The concert involved 8 of Trinity's teaching staff as well as 6 support staff. Trinity's students play all the instruments in the concert.
Impact
The School was over-subscribed for tickets and approximately 400 primary pupils from across the borough enjoyed the production.
Pupil Involvement
The conductors, singers and instrumentalists are all Trinity School students. The students range from 10-18 and the gender balance is reflective of the School's population with a majority of roles being fulfilled by male students with some important support from Sixth Form female students. This is important since the attending primary schools are mixed gender and the aim of the event is, in part, to inspire an interest in learning musical instruments.
Frequency
The School Gala Concert is an annual event. We intend to offer a matinee performance every year to assist local primary schools in their musical provision.
