Primary School Sports Gifted and Talented Day
We are aiming to make facilities at Trinity more accessible to state Primary Schools within the borough as well as supporting the delivery of PE sessions and tournaments for those schools.
We aim to identify the ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ of local schools and in this case the Croydon School's Sport Partnerships.
By hosting this G&T event we can provide a local venue with access to outstanding facilities which we hope will be inspiring and convenient for schools to attend. We recognise the barriers to participation that affect many schools including lack of budget, access to transport and lack of suitably trained specialist sports staff and facilities that Trinity is happy to provide.
Aims
To provide access to outstanding facilities for Trinity School and its Young Leaders to deliver a Gifted and Talented Day for Croydon Schools Sports Partnership Schools.
Pupils identified as Gifted and Talented within the borough are invited to complete a day of sports specific testing covering a range of Fitness Components (speed, agility, endurance etc) using specialist equipment provided by Trinity (electronic sprint timing gates, electronic vertical jump test, rowing machines, exercise bikes, bowling machine etc). Having access to this highly specialist equipment is key to the accuracy of data and forms part of ongoing progress development testing and forms a key correlation with the sports specific and position specific training the pupils will be advised to undertake.
Pupils also benefit from a presentation from an Olympic athlete about his experiences at the London 2012 Olympic Games, an England Cricketer and her pathway into cricket and this is followed by a Q&A session.
Background
The School's Sports Outreach co-ordinator was approached at a Croydon Schools Sports Partnership event and asked whether Trinity School could host this event and provide the venue, equipment, the young volunteers to oversee each testing station and the data recorded.
Resources
Trinity School provide free access to their Strength and Conditioning suite, their main Sports Hall and all the equipment needed to complete the 12 station testing.
Equipment is set up prior to the event by Sports Club staff, refreshments are provided on arrival for staff and a hot lunch is provided for all participants and staff by the School's caterers.
At least 2 Trinity teaching staff oversee the day and the Trinity young leaders. The event runs from 10.00am – 2.00pm.
Impact
'Thank you so much again for all your help over the past 2 Gifted & Talented sessions. They’ve been really good and all of the schools and pupil enjoyed themselves immensely.
I really appreciate all your organisation and use of the facilities at Trinity. It’s been great to have the use of such great facilities and this is something the pupils may not have experienced before'.
Croydon School Sport Partnership Representative
Pupil Involvement
Each year, young leaders from Trinity School 3rd/4th year are used so ages range from 13-15 years old. Trinity Students are briefed before the event on setting up the testing stations, overseeing the validity and accuracy of each test and are in charge of putting their group through the testing on a rotational basis until each group has completed all testing.
Frequency
The event takes place every two years and the event runs from 10.00am – 2.00pm each time. The event will continue to take place bi-annually at Trinity School.
