Primary School Reading Mentors Activity

King's College pupils attend two local primary schools, Holy Trinity and Holway Park, every Friday afternoon to listen to their pupils read on a one-to-one basis.

Aims

The aims of the Reading Mentors scheme are for King's pupils to engage in a community service activity which supports local primary school children in their reading and literacy skills.

The need was identified within the primary schools to improve reading fluency, confidence and language acquisition. It means that all pupils in the relevant year groups (3 to 6) are listened to weekly.

Background

This programme began with one school in September 2023 and expanded to a second in January 2025 when numbers of King's pupils increased. It began on the suggestion from King's to offer the support as part of King's Community Action Programme, a service activity on a Friday afternoon. The primary children have enjoyed the individual one-to-one attention from King's College.

Resources

Two members of King's staff accompany approximately 15 pupils. The activity takes place in the primary school's library.

Impact

See overall impact statement provided by Holy Trinity.

Pupil Involvement

Pupils from King's are Year 10 to Lower Sixth, working with pupils from KS2 (Year 3-6).

Frequency

The activity takes place weekly throughout the school year on Friday afternoons.
