Collaboration Between Schools In Preparing Students For University Medicine Applications

Governor at King's School in Macclesfield, Prof Hanley, who is also Professor of Medicine at Manchester University, has been hosting online ‘Medicine Masterclasses’ each Saturday morning to help prepare students for university medicine interviews. Pupils from King's Sixth Form Division  have been joined by aspiring medics from Tytherington School, the Fallibroome Academy and All Hallows Catholic College in Macclesfield. Prof Hanley has been working with the students so that they feel well prepared for their interviews at various university medical schools across the land.  Places on Medical and Veterinary courses are notoriously competitive and the collaboration between these motivated young students has been extremely useful during their preparation.

Aims

Aim: Prepare students for the selection process for medical/veterinary schools.

Need: These are highly competitive courses where students can benefit from experience as they do not routinely face anything similar at school.

Success Factors: Collaboration, utilising expertise.

Beneficiaries: Students gaining conditional offers of places to study medicine/veterinary science.

Background

King's had trialled these sessions with Prof. Hanley with it's own students for one year and they were found to be useful.  We therefore invited aspiring  medical students from local schools to join the sessions.  Their input is also valued as pupils discuss their experience of medicine interviews with the group (once they start) to help review, reflect, and aid the preparation of others.

Resources

A Professor of Medicine - time and knowledge.

Sessions have been running on Zoom - which helps with the ability of the pupils coming together.

Impact

Anticipated outcomes are offers to study medicine being received by these students.

Pupil Involvement

Pupils are in Year 13 and so are 18 years old.

At various points we have had 14 students involved from across the four schools.

Frequency

Weekly sessions run from September to February.

We will run this activity on an annual basis.
