Latin Outreach Programme

In September 2017, we pioneered an outreach programme in Latin with five Year 9 students from The City Academy, Hackney. We taught one hour per week after school, during the Academy's General Studies lessons. The same program was also offered at City of London Academy Shoreditch Park from September 2018. We are now in the third year of teaching Latin to pupils at City of London Academy Shoreditch Park and this is an important element of our partnership provision.

Aims

The initial year was an introduction to the language to see if interest could be generated in a full GCSE course. The programme aimed to raise students' proficiency level up to GCSE standard by the end of Year 10 and to concentrate on the literature component of the syllabus in Year 11.

The project was established as a result of our partnership with the City of London family of schools.

Impact

Three of the students at The City Academy, Hackney opted to continue Latin in Year 10 and commenced a proper GCSE course from September 2018. 

In September 2018, a new Year 9 contingent also started, with seven students taking the initial course (1 hour /week) using the Cambridge Latin Course. We also started to teach the same beginners’ course at City of London Academy Shoreditch Park to a class of 25 students.
