Kent Primary Schools Cross Country

The Schools at Somerhill, promote, arrange, organise, manage and operate the annual Kent Primary Schools Cross Country Challenge in which over 500 runners from 26 local schools participate in this event set in the 170 acre grounds of the School. The event enables local schools to access and benefit from an event on a scale that would not be achievable otherwise.

Aims

The Schools at Somerhill have a strong tradition of cross-country running and benefit from 170 acres of varied parkland in which to train and compete. The parkland has been a regular venue for IAPS competitions and the School wishes to extend access to the wider community to promote and enhance cross-country running in the county.

Background

The Schools at Somerhill identified a lack of inter-school competitions and cross country running facilities so initiated this event in 2012.

Resources

The Schools at Somerhill issue invitations and coordinate entries, set the course, act as PE supervisors on the day, manage parking, safety, and traffic management, as well as providing toilet facilities and refreshments.

Impact

The local schools are hugely excited by the event and participation continues to increase, both in terms of numbers of schools and number of participants.

Pupil Involvement

Under 9 and Under 11, boys and girls.
