French Curriculum Provision
The Hall sends two French teachers to deliver French language lessons to two of its local partnership primary schools, one day a week, across the whole of the academic year.
The French curriculum provision includes; in-school teaching, lesson plans, tailored schemes of work, collaborative Continuing Professional Development (CPD), learning resources and an invitation to The Hall's annual French play for Years 5 and 6.
Aims
The Hall and its partner schools recognise the benefits of learning a language in primary schools. The programme aims to develop cultural awareness, support children build their confidence in learning another language, introduce another language at primary level before the student transitions to secondary school where the teaching of a modern foreign language is compulsory.
The Hall French Department also aims to support its partner schools to develop their own French curriculum through CPD, discussions and collaborative events.
Background
The relationship between the schools has been long and ongoing, it has been reflective and involves the sharing of ideas and new initiatives.
The Hall and its partner schools discussed and formalised the French teaching offer in response to an offer by Hall School's headmaster.
This support also addresses changes to teaching modern foreign languages in primary schools in the National Curriculum.
Resources
Four teachers from the Hall and partnership school coordinate lessons, resources and activities, supported by the community partnership coordinator.
Lessons take place in the partnership schools for Years 3 - 6 children.
Years 5 - 6 children form all schools attend an annual French language play at The Hall.
Impact
Qualitative and quantitative assessments are carried out termly and annually, focusing on all aspects of the programme, CPD, learning achievements, curriculum.
The project reaches 240 children and 4 teachers on a weekly basis, providing high quality lessons and supportive team teaching/CPD for teachers.
We aim to maintain and co-ordinate the good work already begun with our partners, while sharing ideas and new initiatives so that we learn from each other. This ensures maximum impact and engagement by being inclusive to all levels and abilities.
'"The Hall teachers have provided excellent teaching and learning opportunities for our children over the year and we have so pleased to be able to continue to offer French as part of our curriculum, an MFL provision that we could not afford without this partnership that helps in the transition of the Year 6s to their secondary schools." Headteacher of Fitzjohn’s Primary School
Pupil Involvement
Year 5 - 6 pupils from The Hall and both partnership schools. The group is mixed genders.
Frequency
Lessons take place weekly throughout the academic year and are ongoing.
