Digital Futures
A three stage programme.
The first stage launched involved Year 9 students going to Frithwood Primary School to running a 6 week robotics programme with their Year 6 students.
The second stage involves Year 13 students creating and delivering sessions to Year 4 students on Internet safety and search engines.
The third stage to launch involved our computer science students working with Year 5 on programing.
Aims
The aim of this programme it to allow students at our partner school the opportunity to develop their computing and programming skills, in a way that they might not have otherwise been able too. With particular focus on inspiring the young girls in the primary school by providing inspirational female role models with knowledge and skill in computer sciences.
The success of this programme did depend on the careful selection of the students selected to lead the sessions.
Resources
The programme required that a number of Edison robots and creators' kits for the robotics sessions.
Laptops/computers with suitable programming software (Scratch) was also needed. Our partnership school was able to provide this.
A teacher with good knowledge of the robotics and programing software is needed in order to prepare our students, support them and oversee the sessions.
Sessions occur weekly, for a period of 6 weeks, with our students travelling to our partner school.
Pupil Involvement
The sessions are run in small groups, led by our students. The partner school students are fully immersed in the activities, only receiving direction and support.
Frequency
This is a yearly programme, running for 6 weeks for class (12 weeks in total) for the robotics session.
Two sessions for the internet safety and search engines.
