Impact Statement

We provide one Classics teacher free of charge for an average of one hour a week to teach Latin to Year 5 at Christ Church, Streatham, Primary School. This amounts to 30 hours over the year and impacts 50 pupils. The project is extremely popular with the primary school. The pupils are engaged and were able to finish the ‘Minimus’ textbook by the end of the academic year. The pupils have improved their understanding of grammatical terms and extended their vocabulary by thinking about the English words derived from Latin.

We provide one Classics teacher free of charge for an average of 45 minutes a week to teach Latin to Year 4, 5 and 6 at Streatham Wells Primary School. This amounts to to 25 hours over the year and impacts 75 pupils. The project is extremely popular with the primary school. The pupils are engaged and each year group cover the first four chapters of the ‘Minimus’ textbook in a term improving their understanding of grammatical terms and extending their vocabulary by thinking about the English words derived from Latin.

We provide one Classics teacher free of charge for an average of one hour a week to teach GCSE Classical Civilisation to pupils from Bishop Thomas Grant School, La Retraite School, Chestnut Grove Academy and Norwood School. This amounts to 30 hours over the year and impacts 50 pupils. Qualitative and quantitative assessment is ongoing but the first cohort in 2020 achieved two 9s, three 8s, four 7s, one 6 and two 5s. 

In partnership with Lambeth School Games, we welcomed over 500 pupils from over 20 schools in Lambeth for the Quicksticks Hockey, Hi-5 Netball and Keysteps Gymnastics competitions, providing facilities and referees free of charge.

Year 8 and Year 12 pupils visit the Reception class at St. Julian's Primary School to teach French using songs, games and other activities. This gives the pupils a good grounding in the language at an early age. Year 6 pupils from Henry Cavendish Primary are invited to our school to watch a play in French performed by native speakers to aid comprehension and pronunciation of the target language.

Our school partners with another girls' school, La Retraite, to run a Combined Cadet Force (Royal Navy) section. This provides the opportunity for 100 girls to learn teamwork, leadership and other skills as well as taking part in adventurous activities.
