Impact Statement
Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) have a partnership with St Thomas a Beckett Academy. We enable 12-15 pupils a year to reach GCSE in Latin. The results have been excellent and pupils have been excellent. Pupils have been encouraged to think more widely and deeply about their other subjects. Some are enabled to reach EBacc because of Latin GCSE. The school benefits more widely too as Latin is being introduced to pupils below GCSE by St Thomas a Beckett Academy's own staff. Our own pedagogy is improved by the need to deliver a whole GCSE in a very limited time. Our own pupils are challenged and inspired to work harder so that the joint revision lessons near the exam period are mutually productive and supportive. QEGS(along with our sister School, Wakefield Girls' High School) are involved in a partnership with the SHINE education charity. We take part in SHINE Saturday - Serious Fun on a Saturday. We open our doors to children from local state primary schools (5 schools, 40 Year 5 children) so they can have access to our teaching facilities and resources. This happens over a 11 week period and we have Year 12 helpers each week. Each year QEGS undertakes SPLATS (Students Presenting Learning and Teaching in Science), where our Year 10 pupils deliver science lessons to Year 5 pupils (approx. 100) from local state primary schools. Each year QEGS undertake the 'Year 5' event, where local state primary schools (4), bring their Year 5 pupils to take part in a range of activities at QEGS. As part of QEGS enrichment programme, QED, our students take part in reading schemes with state primaries. An example of which is our students visited a local state primary every Wednesday afternoon, reading with their students who had been identified as requiring extra literacy support. Local state primary schools are invited to QEGS to watch the Matinee performances of our Foundation Drama Productions.- Academic scholarships
