Impact Statement

Various Author visits, Plays and Musicals took place during the year and local primary schools were invited to attend.

WHEW is a youth-led community initiative which linked with our 140th anniversary. The aim was to have a positive impact on the lives of 140 young women in Northamptonshire. The STEAM, Summer Science extravaganza and the STEAM Autumn Masterclasses were the two phases of this programme.
The STEAM, Summer Science Extravaganza was attended by 165 Y5 pupils from local primary schools and 22 Y5 pupils from our Junior School. 24 Y9 pupils and 39 Y7 pupils volunteered during the day, hosting visitors and delivering workshops. They took part in a day of interactive Science shows and workshops to inspire them to engage with and study sciences and consider careers in these areas. Workshops included Rocket Science, Forensics, Chemistry, Coding, Microbiology and Physics.

55 pupils from local primary schools attended our Masterclass programme on Saturday mornings. Interactive workshops on Forensic Science, Coding, Chemistry of Bath Bombs and Marketing and Branding were delivered by 16 of our Sixth Form students.

In November, 10 Sixth form Students from a local academy joined 120 of our students for our Sixth Form conference, #Now’sTheTime. The conference, designed to empower young women to start their working lives with the tools to advance their careers, gain equal pay and to progress without a ceiling, featured an impressive panel of professionals from local businesses and universities. Noisy Classrooms who had worked with our Junior School on a previous project delivered a workshop on effective oracy and debating.

The Junior hosted a STEM taster day for all age groups on November 17th for girls from local primary schools.

Sports Enrichment and Disability Awareness Day took place with 6 sporting activities – Rugby Netball, Hockey, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming and a swimming masterclass taught by our national standard swimmers. 13 primary schools took part with 180 year 4 pupils. 7 staff and 15 pupils from Northampton High School and 2 external coaches ran the event. The girls experienced a number of different sports with expert teaching and guidance and learnt that sport is accessible to those with disabilities. There was full press coverage and the event raised not just the profile of female sport but also disability sport and what is accessible to females in the local area.

We completed the Year 4 sport enrichment and disability sport awareness day – in July 2018, there was a higher profile for the disability games – all students took part in wheelchair rugby, tag rugby, tennis, athletics, cricket, hockey, netball. We had over 200 girls from local state school and our own school taking part, and a group of 15 girls all with a range of learning or physical disabilities who worked round all the activities with Ellie Robinson. Sessions were taught by Northampton High School Sports Staff, as well as Craig Styles (Northampton Saints Wheel Chair Rugby), 2 coaches from Northampton Saints, Julie Shaw (Tennis).

A small hockey tournament for year 4 local primary school, the CSLA students went into schools to deliver hockey sessions and then the local schools were all invited to NHS to compete in a mini-tournament organised by the 6th form students.
