Impact Statement

Birmingham School Games

We continue to provide free use of all out school sites for the Birmingham School Games. The School Games is a national program run by Sport England that encourages competition at a school level, regional level and county level. The Summer Games is the grand final for all of the competition that have taken part throughout the year all over Birmingham. The Sport Birmingham organisers sent us the following note:

‘Many thanks for your help, support and interest around the Birmingham Summer School Games this year. The events were a huge success, with over 2000 young people attending across the 2 days, as both participants, leaders & volunteers. Much of the success was down to the commitment, enthusiasm and generosity provided by our partners, of which KES was key. It has been great to liaise with you throughout the year and also hear about how the school and the trust currently works with the wider community but also how there is an appetite to expand further on this.

On the days, feedback from schools, parents and spectators was excellent and many commented on the fantastic facilities that were provided by you.

Sport Birmingham are indebted to our partners, without which we would be unable to organise such a successful event. We hope that you have been pleased with the partnership with the aim to continue it for the next two years. School Games funding has been guaranteed until 2020 and it would be great to see the summer games stay at, what I think is now considered its home, at the two schools.’

Junior Production Matinee

We hosted an Outreach matinee performance of the KES Junior Production 'Around the World in 80 Days'.

The pupils from a school commented:

"I loved how they switched it round so it's a woman asking a man to get married - I was surprised!"
"I liked when Passepartout got put into jail, it was really funny"
"The set was amazing and I am really excited for our end of year 6 performance"

"It was great to see the screen and watch the letters appear. It really sets your eyes to it so you don't even notice the people on stage getting ready in the background!”

Chess Competitions

Every year we host two chess competitions for local junior schools. This gives the children in chess clubs a goal to aim for and children the opportunity to mix and play against lots of other children. Both competitions are well-attended and open to any junior school child with a good level of chess.

‘I just wanted to say thank you for the Chess Tournament on Friday afternoon. It was the first time that we've done one of these and the children really enjoyed it. The organisation was excellent, especially the way that you arranged to have increasingly equal matches as the tournament progressed. I know my children were really pleased with their medals too.
Thank you very much, and we look forward to coming again next year.’


Maths Competitions

Every year we run two maths competitions one for year 4 and one for year 5. The heats take place every Friday afternoon run by a member of our staff and a group of year 11 boys. Both competitions end with a finals day where the finalists are invited to school for lunch before the competition and we invite a maths speaker to give a presentation and present the prizes.

‘Although they were a little disheartened at not being placed they were fired up after your brilliant speaker. We are doing a mini maths assembly based on her talk (minus the smoke rings sadly!!)’

The four children really enjoyed the experience and were so excited to tell all of their friends back at school about the competition and maths they had encountered. Most of them had never stepped foot inside such a fascinating building before and felt that they were "at Hogwarts!" It was an inspiring experience and we were really grateful for the opportunity to attend. Thanks once again. ‘
