Impact Statement

Music collaboration with Five Islands Academy
A teacher at Five Islands said 'I can honestly say without the use of the rehearsal space we would not get our one essential practice with our accompanist before competing at the Cornwall Music Festival. This is invaluable to us, and Truro School Music Department is highly accommodating for our needs and has even lent us instruments that would have been too tricky to transport from Scilly. Without the use of this space and the help of the department we would not have the wonderful experience that we enjoy each year at the CMF'.

The Combined Truro Schools Art Project is a collaborative state/independent school project that enables staff from other schools to work collaboratively. An Art Teacher from Penair School said 'Sharing ideas and forging new relationships enriches my ideas for schemes of work and improves my teaching'. Each year the theme of the project changes and requires participating teachers to develop a new scheme of work to deliver to a target year group. This process never fails to be a positive experience often challenging staff to develop new ideas and skills.
'Another incredibly valuable aspect to the project is the opportunity to work with artists. Learning from professional experienced artists is informing and inspiring'. Engaging the community of artists with the work of schools benefits communities and enriches the culture experiences available in Cornwall.
The project culminates in a celebratory exhibition and event combining the work of art, music and drama departments. The wider community are able to visit the exhibition and it provides a platform for schools to share and celebrate much of the great creative work often hidden away from the communities they serve.

Bursary support with school fees

Our bursaries are for pupils who will thrive at the School, but whose family circumstances mean the school fees are otherwise unaffordable. A bursary is means tested reduction in fees. Awards can range from 5% up to 100% of fees depending on assessed need. Through the work and generosity of others, and our staff, we are actively seeking to expand bursary provision and hence widen access to our School. Any family may apply for potential financial assistance by submitting a means-tested bursary application. Bursary applications are reviewed on a case by case basis and outcomes of those reviews will establish whether bursary support is warranted and if so, at what level.

We offer our means-tested bursaries both as a means of financial assistance to support widening access to a Truro School education, and also as a means of supporting continuity of education to current Truro School pupils from families whose personal circumstances change unexpectedly for the worse.

Financial Declaration forms must be completed in full by the age appropriate deadline and returned to the Finance Manager, along with all relevant documentation.

In order to be fair to everyone, we have a duty to ensure that all bursary awards are well focused and so, as well as current earnings, other factors will be considered in determining the necessary level of bursary. These will include:

The ability to improve the financial position or earning power of the family (where there are two partners both would be expected to be employed unless one is prevented from doing so through incapacity, the need to care for children under school age or other dependants or the requirements of their partner’s work).  If this is not the case, a notional average salary for the area will be included before the assessment is made.

Opportunities to release any capital (significant capital savings and investments would be expected to be used for the payment of  school fees as would significant equity in a house).

Scholarships

Truro School offers Academic, Co-Curricular, Fencing, Choral and Sixth Form Diploma Scholarships.

For Academic and Co-curricular: Truro School scholarships are awarded to pupils who show exceptional ability or potential in their approach to academic studies or in their commitment to co-curricular activities. From September 2023, scholarships for pupils entering the School in Years 7-11 (1st-5th Year) will be awarded in the form of further enhanced educational opportunities for the scholars themselves, and not as reductions in fees for parents. We take this approach because we believe the direct beneficiary of a scholarship should be the pupil. By this approach the school can and will target the budget associated with scholarship into creative scholarship opportunities directly.

For Sixth Form Diploma Scholarships: At 16+ entry into our Sixth Form, for current pupils and those applying from outside Truro School, scholarships will take the form of a Diploma Scholarship Award, which will include 5-10% fee remission as well as similarly enhanced scholarship opportunities.

For Fencing: A small number of Fencing Scholarships are awarded to candidates entering Truro School at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships awarded at 11+ and 13+ will usually be worth 5-10% of the fees and will be reviewed at 13+ and 16+. At the discretion of the Head, a select number of high value 16+ scholarships may be awarded to students of exceptional talent.

For Girl Choristers: Girls currently in Year 8 can apply to entry into the Choir when they reach Year 9 the following September. Girls from any school can apply, though if they are successful they have to move to Truro School. Girl Chorister Scholarships are worth 25% of the fees. This can be supplemented by a means-tested bursary if appropriate.

All scholars, whatever their discipline, are expected to work hard, contribute positively to the life of the School, to be involved fully in their sphere of school activity, showing enthusiasm and commitment, and to be a credit to the School in their behaviour and attitude to learning.  They have an important role to play in setting an example to others. Continuation of any award is dependent upon pupils fulfilling these expectations in addition to the requirements of their individual award.
