Impact Statement

We have a growing programme of engagement with our local maintained school, and are shortly to sign an MOU formalising the relationship and the specific areas in which we will work together more closely in the future.

In the last year we hosted a public seminar, with pupils, staff and parents from both Mount Kelly and Tavistock College taking part in a discussion led by an academic from Exeter University, looking at the politics of nuclear deterrence. The Principal of Tavistock College commented on the benefits of such events, and reported how much the College’s pupils had enjoyed the event, and Mount Kelly pupils certainly benefitted from engaging in serious academic debate with young people from across the community. This summer we will be repeating this initiative, with a seminar on the historical context to Brexit, and this is certainly a programme which we will develop.

Last November, Mount Kelly organised a community concert in the local church, to mark the centenary of the Armistice. The programme was made up of musicians and singers from Mount Kelly, Tavistock College, the local choral group and the local brass band. It was attended by over 400 people, and as well as being a tremendous success, there was an overwhelming sense that the event marked the start of greater musical engagement between Mount Kelly and the local community. The event was very much a Mount Kelly initiative, and as with our joint seminars with Tavistock College, has set the pattern for future collaborative projects.

A number of our staff serve as governors at local secondary and state schools, and we are regularly told what value they bring as experienced educationalists. Conversely, they bring to Mount Kelly insights into the wider educational debate, with particular regards to pedagogy and compliance.
