Year 12 Community Engagement

Each term, Blundell’s runs a Field Day where the entire school steps off timetable to engage in enriching offsite activities. In the autumn term, Year 12 students dedicate their day to supporting local organisations, strengthening community ties. Working in teams of eight-10, pupils spend the day immersed in the work of their host organisations- learning, contributing, and building lasting partnerships.

Placements have included primary schools, the Grand Western Canal, Tiverton Castle and Knightshayes Court, Community Centres, Care Homes and the Tiverton Pannier Market as well the charities CHAT and Hospiscare as examples. Pupils have also worked with Devon Wildlife Trust, Tiverton Hospital Wildlife Garden and Sustainable Tiverton.

These experiences foster empathy, awareness, and a deeper understanding of the vital roles these groups play in our community.

Aims

While Blundellians have consistently demonstrated generosity through fundraising and charitable initiatives, it is equally important that they engage directly with the organisations and individuals who dedicate their time serving others. Community Engagement Field Day is designed to give students hands-on experience in volunteering, helping them understand the value and impact of service within society.

Background

Service to others has long been a part of the Blundell’s ethos, with many students actively involved through the Volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Our Community Partnerships programme builds on this tradition by offering structured opportunities for pupils to contribute meaningfully to the local community.

Now a formal component of the annual Field Day programme, community engagement is a key element in fostering social responsibility and civic awareness among our students.

Resources

Coordinating Community Engagement Day requires careful planning and significant logistical support. Transporting student teams to their designated locations involves multiple minibuses, although some groups are fortunate to be within walking distance of their placements. Activities—particularly those focused on environmental work—often require a wide range of tools and equipment. The success of the day depends on thorough risk assessments and the dedicated time and effort of staff to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Impact

The impact of our Community Engagement Day has been profound, both for our students and the organisations that generously host them. The day fosters meaningful relationships between Blundell’s and local groups, creating a mutually beneficial experience. Students gain valuable insight into the inspiring work being carried out in our community, while developing essential life skills such as communication, leadership, organisation, and teamwork. It’s a day filled with enjoyment and purpose—an opportunity to step off campus, connect with people they might not otherwise meet, and contribute positively to the lives of others. This act of service not only supports mental health and wellbeing but also reinforces a sense of gratitude and perspective. Students come to appreciate the privilege of attending Blundell’s and recognise their potential to make a difference in the wider world.

Above all, Community Engagement Day is a powerful catalyst for character development, helping our pupils grow into thoughtful, compassionate, and socially-responsible individuals.

Pupil Involvement

Each year the day involves the whole of Year 12, so around 100 pupils.

Frequency

Once a year in the autumn for a whole school day.
