Mathematics – The Great Maths Race, run every Spring
Walthamstow Hall’s Maths Department has run a ‘Great Maths Race’ for Year 4 and 5 pupils from local primary schools for well over a decade. The afternoon event tests the mathematical and athletic agility of teams. The event is orchestrated by the entire Walthamstow Hall Mathematics Department, assisted by Walthamstow Hall Year 13 and Year 7 students.
Aims
The Great Maths Race is designed to take mathematics outside of the classroom and show how exciting it can be.
Background
The event has been running for over 10 years.
Resources
The event is staged in the Walthamstow Hall Senior School Hall and uses Walthamstow Hall IT to chart each team's success, Year 13 students to act as adjudicators and Year 7 students acting as Marshalls. The event is fully funded by Walthamstow Hall.
Impact
The success of this event has not been formally measured but the uptake of places every year and the enthusiasm of the participants and their supporting teachers and parents gives a strong indication that is greatly enjoyed by all who take part. It is always a fun-filled, very energetic and noisy afternoon. All participants leave with a great sense of achievement from solving stretching maths problems.
Pupil Involvement
Every participating school sends 8 pupils to to take part in the event, 4 from Year 4 and 4 from Year 5.
Frequency
The Great Maths Race happens in the Summer Term each year and has been a regular fixture in the Walthamstow Hall calendar for more than a decade.
