Cheadle Hulme and Thorn Grove Partnership

The Cheadle Hulme School and Thorn Grove partnership has been running since 2008 thanks to the generosity of The Oglesby Charitable Trust. A  number of CHS students visit Thorn Grove and help out in the Playground during lunchtimes and run additional activities and clubs. The Head of Football at CHS has also run special football sessions for students. CHS hosts the Sports Day for Thorn Grove students every year.

The aim of the partnership is to enhance the educational experience for pupils at Thorn Grove School. It enables pupils of Thorn Grove to explore a wider range of activities, encouraging them to broaden their skills and work with older children in a positive environment.

The Thorn Grove Partnership is funded by The Oglesby Charitable Trust. The Oglesby family have long had links with Cheadle Hulme School; Mrs Kate Vokes is a former pupil of the School, and current parent, whilst her brother Mr Chris Oglesby, has served on the Governing Body. It is via these links that in 2004 the idea of operating a partnership with a local Primary School from a more socially deprived area came about. CHS initially worked with Alexandra Park School and in 2008 the Head of Thorn Grove School approached CHS about expanding the partnership. Since 2009 Thorn Grove has been the main focus for CHS.

A member of teaching staff is resposible for co-ordinating the 6th form students and for meeting a member of staff at Thorn Grove each term to review the input from CHS. CHS hosts Sports Day for the students of Thorn Grove each summer on the School's fields.

A review is undertaken each year to monitor effectiveness of the partnership from both the Thorn Grove and CHS perspective. It reviews the impact on the Thorn Grove students through pupil feedback and the impact on the Sixth Formers and the development of their coaching skills and supporting younger children.

Pupil Involvement

This year there are 64 Year 12 and Year 13 (aged 16-18) students from CHS regularly giving up their lunchtimes to either run clubs or supervise the lunchtime playground activities. There are usually around 4 CHS students supervising each club, with anything from 5 to 15 Thorn Grove pupils in attendance at each club (aged 8-10)

CHS students offer clubs every day during term time for Thorn Grove students.
