Impact Statement

Primary Proms -January 2018 the Scarborough Primary Proms is an outreach event which we open to all local Primary Schools in North Yorkshire. The aim is to offer musically gifted and talented children a different musical experience and join us for various workshops. With children from over 6 different schools and more than 35 children in total this was a great opportunity to experience, with our music staff and senior music students, different music workshops including composition, singing, group music ensembles and a performance at the end for soloists and the ‘orchestra in a day’.

Cross Country Challenge June 2018 we hosted our annual Cross Country challenge for Year 5 & 6 pupils from throughout north and east Yorkshire primary schools again, along the Scarborough coast and back at the main College hall where the individual prizes were later awarded. With over 160 Year 5 and 6 pupils taking part from more than 5 local primary schools the children all enjoyed and competed well at this challenging event. With the support of our Prep School staff and numerous Sixth Form students on hand as supporters and marshals for the day it was a whole school event in terms of organisation and implementation. Refreshments and goodie bags were provided for all children who take part plus medals and trophies presented for the overall winners.

Harry Potter OUTREACH PROGRAMME June 2018 In the summer term we organised a Harry Potter Day and invited the Year 5 pupils of all of the local Primary Schools. 6 schools attended with over 200 children over two days taking part in the wizards and witches spells and potions science day. We provided all the facilities for the event including all of our science staff and Sixth Form science students to help manage and lead the day. Lunch was included and all of the children received a gift to take home. The day was not only about being fun but showing how science can be used in day to day life and opened up their minds to the bigger picture of science. It also gave them an opportunity to see what science can be like in senior school education giving them the opportunities to get involved in experiments, which many do not have access to in their local primary school. This was a hugely successful day based on the feedback from the visiting staff and pupils and we will be running the same thing again next year.

Staff Outreach programme to Primary Schools. We offer a number of teachers to our local primary schools as part of our extended outreach programme. Mr Denton visits local primary schools offering a science day and experiments based on the requests of the primary school and their current curriculum teaching to the relevant year group. Mr Cunningham visits local schools delivering outreach hockey and sports coaching to local primary schools who do not have access to such staff or experienced coaches.

In October 2018 we hosted our first Primary Opera in a Day event. There were 120 Year 5 and 6 children from four local schools that came together for a day of singing, music and A Whistle Stop Opera performance from Opera North. Inspired and coached by our music staff and the wonderful team from Opera North. This was another free event with lunch provided and a mini performance staged at the end of the day for parents and friends.

School Production November 2018 every year when the school puts on their annual whole school production, we open up the matinee dress rehearsal to the local primary schools. This year was no different. The production was Annie and after inviting all the local feeder Primary Schools, 6 schools attended with over 350 children and 25 members of staff attending for the matinee performance. This was free and we provided refreshments for everyone at half time. A great way to show and hopefully encourage Year 5 and 6 children to get involved with any aspect of school productions, drama or theater studies in the future.

All of our outreach programmes are at NO COST to those attending, taking part or who get involved. All the costs of staff, facilities and refreshments are covered by the College as part of our commitment to help further the local community and primary schools.
