Impact Statement
Stormont has been working with two schools this academic year since September 2018.With Little Heath Primary we have worked with 60 KS2 children so far which will go up to 90 by the end of the year.
Year 4 have been able to enhance their learning of the Stone Age by recreating ceramic work and artefacts which have then been displayed in the school foyer. Some children have never used clay before and have now developed skills in construction in making their vessels through the technique of coil work and modelling skills in recreating artefacts. Experiential learning of history has helped them embed key facts of this time. Visiting the pottery at Stormont each week has also given them access to a purpose built environment which they would otherwise not experience.
Year 3 have been able to develop their skills in construction through using a mould with coil work. These plates have then been further developed with skills in decoration taken from the children utilising their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian numerals into pattern work. Creating a pattern has enabled them to learn more about composition and glaze work skills. Also learning the process of how pottery is made is something they would otherwise not experience.
The pupils have been enabled to produce work of high quality which has inevitably had an impact on their self-esteem.
With Pope Paul Primary we have worked with 60 KS1 children so far which will go up to 90 by the end of the year.
Year 1 were able to develop observational drawing, painting, collage skills in recording natural forms which then also led onto modelling skills in clay work. Most of the children had not worked with clay previously and many flourished with the experience of being able to create something three dimensional. One child with Aspergers, who had been a very reluctant learner, thrived in working with clay and is communicating in a new and more willing way for the first time.
Year 2 have been developing their drawing, painting, collage skills in recording still life forms and have also been able to experience using clay for the first time in modelling and tile work. It is an opportunity for the children’s school to create a permanent wall hanging which enhances their environment and raises the profile of their school in what they are able to offer. There has been surprise and delight in what has been ‘brought out’ in these children as they have previously not had a specialist teacher to guide them.
