Impact Statement

For two years our specialist Computing teacher has been delivering Computing lessons to the Year 6 Orchard Primary children. We collect them using our minibus, they then have an hour lesson and we drop them back to their school following the session. Orchard Primary does not have a specialist IT teacher so the children benefit from the additional expertise of a specialist which develops their skills. We are also fortunate to have a wide range of computing resources and the children also enjoy using these robotic devices. The Orchard Deputy Head has remarked upon the positive impact the lessons have had upon the children’s skills and general enthusiasm for the subject. The children themselves have also commented positively about the lessons. In terms of time this amounts to eighteen hours.

To assist with the teaching of coding the West Lodge Computing teacher has delivered a ninety minute practical training session for Orchard teachers in teaching this element of the subject. He has also supplied eight older computers which can be dismantled to enhance the children’s understanding of how a computer works.

Our Reception class benefit from using the Orchard Forest School facility and use this for an hour on a weekly basis with our staff directing the lessons. From this there has been liaison between the Early Years staff at both schools, with joint moderation sessions and sharing of best practice.

A number of the Orchard staff have attended training / inset sessions at West Lodge – these have included workshops focusing upon use of Purple Mash and Supporting Dyslexic Pupils. These were funded by West Lodge School. There have been other internal training sessions such as CEOP which Orchard staff have also attended.

West Lodge introduced Able Writers’ Workshops for those children in Years 5 and 6 who particularly enjoy and have a flair for extended writing. Orchard pupils were invited to attend the first session at West Lodge and these now happen on a termly basis, alternating between the two schools. There is close collaboration between the English Coordinators, who have benefited from sharing ideas and enjoy working together. This gives the children the chance to collaborate with other children whom they would not normally have the chance to work with and there has been some impressive work produced.

Although in its early stages, subject coordinators have started to meet to share ideas and expertise, which is particularly beneficial for two small, single form entry schools. This has been particularly beneficial in Maths, resulting in the introduction of the Maths Mastery initiative at West Lodge following its positive impact at Orchard Primary.

The Head at West Lodge has joined the governing body at Orchard Primary and through participation in the teaching standards group aims to contribute positively to governance at Orchard Primary.
