Impact Statement

We second a Physical Education teacher for two afternoons per week to a local state primary school. He teaches 4 year groups, reception to Year 3. This has a direct impact on the fitness, well-being and education of 90 pupils who would not otherwise have Physical Education lessons and/or certainly not with a PE specialist.
One member of staff from each departments of Media and Design Technology visited a local state school to help with A level coursework moderation and shared good practice. The external moderators reported that the grades given were accurate which had a positive impact on the pupils and their overall grades.
We provided grounds staff, with our school’s machinery, to maintain and improve the local community playing field which is used for games by the local primary school. 230 pupils, and their staff will have benefited. The grounds staff also grit paths and play grounds for free during cold weather, impacting on the health and safety and physical and mental well-being of all pupils. Grounds staff also maintain the greenery on the school site and playground. This adds up to 158 hours per year.
We provided free use of transport (minibuses) and sometimes drivers for four local state primary schools, to help with sports fixtures, trips and concerts.
We provided sports fields and senior pupils (umpires and organisers) when hosting a cricket tournament for 8-10 local state primary schools. This has an impact on approximately 120 pupils, their staff and parents.
We provided a grass athletics track, surrounding areas, facilities and equipment for a local state primary schools’ sports day. This was a whole school event, therefore positively impacting on 210 pupils, their parents and staff.
We opened up our Art department, and used our staff and senior pupils, to host an Art club for a local state primary school. The club ran for 2 hours, one afternoon per week, for one term.
We provided free use of our sports hall for 1.5 hours per week, for 8 weeks, so pupils from a local state primary school could follow an indoor sports programme.
We annually provide free use of our outdoor swimming pool, so the local state primary school can host their Year 6 leavers’ party, along with staff and parents.
We have provided the use of our netball court, free of charge, to help parents of local state primary school children, to set up a netball club on a Sunday morning.
One of our SMT and two other members of staff are governors for a secondary school and two local, state primary schools. They have given approximately 40 hours of their time to this governance, using their vast experience, which has had a very positive impact on pupils, staff and parents.
A Tag rugby tournament, for 8 local primary schools, was organised by a College member of staff, helped by Year 12 Sport BTEC students. The tournament was for Year 3 students with approx. 75 pupils taking part in November.

Financial assistance is offered via two main channels, to ensure the College is accessible to as many pupils as possible who meet our entry criteria. Fee discounts can be offered via scholarships or bursaries.

A scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic, artistic or sporting excellence. A scholarship has to be applied for separately before admission to the College and normally carries a value of up to 10%, although in exceptional circumstances higher values can be awarded. Exhibitions of 5% are also available.

The College Governors are committed to broadening access to the school by offering means-tested financial support to eligible parents or guardians to assist with the payment of school fees. Such support is known as a bursary and may be awarded in the form of a discount on tuition fees payable, depending on the financial, compassionate or other pertinent circumstances of applicants.

Bursaries are awarded on the basis of the financial needs of the family and what the child can bring to and gain from the College. To apply for a bursary, there are two additional forms required. Firstly, a Bursary Application Form which covers the mean-testing element. This will be followed up by a home visit from the independent Bursary Administration Company which will provide the College with a detailed report on the family’s financial situation.

Shiplake College offers one special All-Rounder scholarship to a boy currently at a state-maintained primary school seeking to join us our Year 7 in September 2019. The scholarship is particularly aimed at boys who would not be able to attend Shiplake without substantial financial support, and up to 100% assistance may be awarded for the right candidate.

This special scholarship is awarded to one boy who excels academically and also displays talent, or shows the potential to, in other areas of school life such as sport, music, art or drama. The scholarship is available to day pupils or flexi, weekly or full boarders, and families should be prepared to make a means-tested bursary application.
