Impact Statement

Merchant Taylors’ School: Collaboration with State Schools

At the request of local state schools, the Head Master and several academic and support staff serve as volunteer Governors, whilst five staff help to run local Scout groups. The Sports Department supported South Oxhey schools by hosting a range of events including: indoor athletics, swimming, sports days and activity days. The School supported sporting programs in local schools and School facilities are used regularly by local Scouts. A team of Sixth Formers supports drama and music in local primary schools; other groups of pupils support reading schemes.

Children from local primary schools used the School’s Science Labs, Sports Hall and Design Centre. In addition, an outdoor activities day was provided for Colnbrook School. The School’s IT Department provided desktop computers to Woodlands Special Needs School and South Oxhey Sea Scouts. During Field Days, the School provided multi-activity days for local primary schools. In addition, the School offered a Maths Afternoon and regular Science Challenges for local primary schools, attended by Eastbury Farm and Warren Dell. Children from St Mary’s School in Rickmansworth are provided with swimming sessions and lunch every week.
Governors maintained their support to the local Community by providing access to around 1600 members of the public drawn from over 65 local sporting and social organisations of all age groups. Support to local primary schools continued, including Saint Mary’s School in Rickmansworth the Reach Free School in Watford and Colnbrook School in South Oxhey. In addition, MTS hosted sports days and swimming galas for 5 local schools. Electric Umbrella, a charitable group of local disabled musicians, were provided with a venue and support facilities for weekly rehearsal and termly performances at MTS. Activate Sports, The Hive and Future Star Education (Young Engineers) provided holiday activities for local children, utilising School sports pitches, swimming pool, grounds and classrooms. South Oxhey Sea Scouts were provided with coaching, transport and equipment during their Watersports training programme at Merchant Taylors’ School which culminated in a British Canoeing Two Star qualification completed on the River Lea in Hertford.

The School continued to support a number of state schools with both university applications and careers development programmes, by hosting mock interviews, aiding with UCAS applications and holding Young Enterprise sessions and Medical School taster days. This included Ruislip High School, Haydon School, Rickmansworth School, Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls. The Careers Department hosted the Young Enterprise competition, attended by local state Schools in Watford and Rickmansworth. They also provided a medical interview skills training day and Sixth Form career management skills day for local schools during the October Field Day.

The School supported the Extended Project Qualification by inviting local state schools to attend the Presentation Evening at Merchant Taylors’ and encouraging collaboration between teachers on best practice. The Science Department supported Bushey Academy with teacher development and provision of science glassware during the year. Pupils from local state schools made use of the Design Centre technical facilities and expertise from the Design and Technology staff. A two day STEM course was attended by 7 local state schools.
