Impact Statement

One of our longest running projects is our partnership with Little Heath School in the London Borough of Redbridge for two hours of swimming on a Monday afternoon each week. Each week, around 15 pupils with severe learning needs come for lessons in our swimming pool and are given expert coaching from the swimming teachers from Pool Schools. They are assisted by volunteers from Bancroft’s Sixth Form. By doing so, the pupils learn how to build relationships and commit to an important responsibility. 

We also host a PHAB club on a Monday evening in our Prep School Hall, which is a social club for disabled children and adults. Pupil volunteers assist with this by playing games with the guests, helping with refreshments and are increasingly getting involved in the logistical arrangements. Those who attend the club have commented what an impact it has made to their lives and how enjoyable it is to have some time to build friendships with our students.

Our Key Stage 3 Year groups now have a drop-down day per year, where they take part in a variety of tasks on and off-site, undertaking a range of maintenance, environmental, sustainability and craft challenges. In the first iterations of these, the pupils did painting and maintenance at ELHAP (standing for Every Life Has a Purpose – a nearby school for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults) made cushions and hedgehog houses; planted a range of plants at Copped Hall and decorated pots which were then filled with flowers and taken to a local Residential Home. They also litter-picked in the Epping Forest and read to children at local primary schools.

Every year the Careers department at Bancroft’s School organise events that will assist our pupils in deciding and equipping themselves with the tools they require to make sound choices about their futures. To these events we invite pupils from each of our partner schools. These schools include, Drapers Academy from Romford, Woodbridge High School from Woodford Green, St. Paul’s Way Trust, from Hackney, Sir George Monoux School from Walthamstow, Roding Valley High School from Loughton, Trinity High School, Woodford Green and Woodford County High School for Girls. The events that we host include:

The Bancroft’s University and Careers fair.
Competitive University Admissions Workshop, presented by Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, UCL and Durham universities.
A wide range of careers talks and events which include monthly lunchtime sessions and evening Q&As
Law Day, where the pupils we are invited to spend a day at the Courts in London and attend and participate in a mock trail.
·      An International Women’s Week Careers Fair.

In addition, Pupils from the Lower 6th complete a 3-part introduction to Art History alongside pupils from 3 partner schools. This is hosted by teachers at the National Gallery where pupils from different schools work together.

Some members of our L6 also regularly take part in an Enterprise competition, organized in aid of fund-raising for Haven House.

We are developing a partnerships network with local schools in the area. We are planning to run some departmental intra-school events between Bancroft’s and Heathcote Secondary School and Wanstead High School.

Our Performing Arts department always invite local schools to matinee performances of the shows they put on and the Music department regularly perform for different groups in the local community (eg singing Christmas songs to an Alms house and a local residential care home). In addition, they have developed strong links with King Soloman’s School, with whom they are working to support them in developing their schemes of work and support them in the development of new staff.

The History, Geography and DT departments are also supporting subject leaders in a local primary school (Aldersbrook Primary School) to develop their schemes of work to allow for increased opportunities to stretch and challenge the more able students.
