Impact Statement

• We have a partnership with Oliver’s Battery Primary School for which we cover all tuition and transport costs. This activity benefits 100 pupils from Oliver’s Battery each year
“Education is all about partnerships and we are really pleased to be working with St Swithun’s School. We visit their school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Tuesdays involves an academic enrichment working with their specialist teachers and Thursdays we will be using their swimming facilities, including swimming coaches, this will be for Year 3. St. Swithun’s are not only providing the facilities, they are also providing the transport. On Friday afternoons a group of pupils will visit our school and listen to readers in Year 1 and 2. We are really excited about this opportunity and know that this will add to the rich curriculum that we already offer here at school.” Miss F Wood, Headteacher
Activities include:
Over 30 pupils from Oliver’s Battery visit St Swithun’s each week for academic enrichment sessions (maths, French, art and drama), led by St Swithun’s staff and pupils
Pupils from St Swithun’s to visit Oliver’s Battery to deliver weekly individual reading support to 40 pupils
60 Pupils from Oliver’s Battery visit St Swithun’s for weekly swimming lessons - all tuition and facility costs are covered by St Swithun’s


• We have a partnership with Sun Hill Primary School for which we cover all tuition and transport costs. This activity benefits over 100 pupils from Oliver’s Battery each year.

“The children have loved their sessions with you and have learned a lot about the processes that were being studied. The practical sessions have enabled them to explore the concepts more fully gaining first-hand experience that has been hugely beneficial and an experience that we could not have provided.” Sun Hill Headteacher.

Activities include:
Over 30 pupils from Sun Hill visit St Swithun’s each week for academic enrichment sessions (science and maths), led by St Swithun’s staff and pupils
60 Pupils from Sun Hill visit St Swithun’s for weekly swimming lessons – all tuition and facility costs are covered by St Swithun’s

• We also have a partnership with Winnall Primary School which involves weekly reading to 20 primary school pupils, delivered by our pupils.

• St Swithun’s has developed a reputation as a hub for mathematical activities within the region, giving access to the subject to children from local state schools in addition to CPD opportunities for staff including:

o regularly hosting teachers from state schools to discuss matters mathematical and ICT-related
o biennially we run the regional final of the Team Maths Challenge, hosting 24 schools
o Annually, we host the 2-day UKMT Maths Circle for 60-70 gift and talented Year 10 students from local schools and also a Maths Inspiration day of lectures which includes over 120 mathematicians from state schools.
Our head of mathematics is committed to supporting UKMT, the non-profit organisation which runs UKMT Maths Challenges, Team Maths Challenges and Olympiads. This member of staff is a member of the UKMT Challenges Subtrust, the committee which organises annual mathematics competitions entered by over 600 students nationally, as well as being on the UKMT Enrichment Subtrust, which runs enrichment event for mathematics teachers and summer schools for gifted and talented students from state and independent schools alike. In addition, he is in charge of the marking of the Year 9 Olympiad nationally.

• Members of St Swithun’s staff undertake the following volunteer work:
o Trustee of the Royal Society of Biology, organising events at St Swithun’s for state school pupils
o Teaching science in a local primary school
o Delivering critical thinking skills workshops for two local primary schools
o Acting as a governor for two local state schools
o Auditing and constructing the RE curricula and best practice across the county as a member of the Hampshire SACRE.
o Acting as an educator for the Holocaust Educational Trust, undertaking both outreach programmes in state schools and taking groups of students to Auschwitz.
o Organising a biennial GAP Fair and Careers Fair which is open to pupils from the local community
o Running a series of lectures throughout the year featuring high profile visiting speakers which are attended by local schools and organisations free of charge.

• Working with the University of Southampton’s PGCE Partnership Programme, our Art Department designs and delivers some of the pedagogical subject training to the 11-18 Art PGCE students this year. The training for the trainee teachers from the programme takes place in our art studios. The trainees attending will be placed in a variety of local state schools for their school placements.

• Our pupils and staff will assist in the delivery of academic support to primary school pupils attending Into University (Into University (www.intouniversity.org) twilight sessions.

• St Swithun’s became a Hampshire Music Service Hub to provide rehearsal and performance opportunities for state school musicians with our orchestra and also the opportunity to attend musical event and masterclasses at St Swithun’s.
