Impact Statement

The most recent Ofsted inspection of the school-sponsored academy (May 2018), judged the school’s governance to be ‘highly effective.’ Four senior members of staff sit on the academy’s governing body, which is chaired by the school’s partnership manager. Another of the sponsor’s senior members of staff also chairs the academy education committee. The inspectors added that governors knew the school well and offered an informed and appropriate range of support and challenge to the Principal, who had galvanised the staff and was driving up standards. Interventions by the sponsor in Year 11 science resulted in stronger outcomes for the second year running. Small group interventions in MFL and maths continue to help stretch the most able students at the academy. Year 12 and 13 students were supported in their UCAS applications and the academy enjoyed three Oxbridge offers, where the predecessor school had had no such offers for decades. The three successful academy students had regular academic support and interview practice at the sponsor school as part of their Oxbridge preparation.

The quality of Middle Leaders at both schools was strengthened by the introduction of the NPQML qualification, while there was further CPD in shared curriculum reviews and in delivering coaching for staff at both schools.

Students from the academy join the sponsor’s CCF Contingent and are being promoted to NCO ranks. Performers from both schools share the stage in the sponsor school’s important dance show, while co-curricular activity is developing with the academy’s feeder primary schools.
